The latest report by KPMG India titled ‘Future of food systems: Preparing for the next frontier’ has highlighted how changing consumption patterns, population growth, climate pressures and resource constraints are reshaping food systems and has identified six levers for transformation.
It identified productivity enhancement, food system efficiency, supply chain excellence, transparency and traceability, technology enablement, and sustainability-led growth as six levers for transformation.
On affordability and nutrition gap, the report said approximately 520.1 million people (35.5 per cent of India’s population) were unable to afford a healthy diet in 2025, highlighting the challenge of making nutritious food accessible and affordable.
Food intake below needs
On production-consumption paradox, it said despite food production being around 36 per cent above normative requirements, actual food consumption remains approximately 20 per cent below prescribed requirements, underscoring the gap between food availability and nutrition security.
Touching upon storage and supply-chain infrastructure, it said India faces a cold storage capacity deficit of 10-15 million tonnes, while post-harvest losses are estimated at 6-15 per cent for fruits and 4.8-11.6 per cent for vegetables.
The report has called for a shift from food security to nutrition security, driven by improved agricultural productivity, technology adoption, efficient supply chains and sustainable resource management.
It underscored the importance of coordinated action across government, industry and the wider food ecosystem to strengthen nutrition security while improving productivity, resilience and sustainability.
New phase
Quoting Himanshu Rattan, Partner and Lead - Food, Agri and Allied Services, Government and Public Services, KPMG in India, a media statement said India’s food system is entering a new phase of transformation. As the focus expands from food security to nutrition security, improving productivity, strengthening value chains and building resilience will be critical to meeting future requirements. The future of food systems will depend on how effectively innovation, infrastructure and sustainability priorities come together to deliver better outcomes across the ecosystem, Rattan said.
Nikhil Sethi, Partner and Head, Consumer Markets, KPMG in India, said: “India has made remarkable progress in food security. The next challenge is ensuring that nutritious food is accessible, affordable and convenient for every citizen. Consumer market companies have a critical role to play in shaping healthier choices and building a more nutrition-secure India.”
